Naperville Area Winter Activities
Sometimes you want to be indoors during the winter but still enjoy winter activities – an indoor ice rink is the best of both worlds in this case. There are some great rinks for Naperville area winter activities – whether you’re a kid or adult, first timer or speed demon skater there are skate sessions for everyone. All Seasons Ice Rink has all you need for every skill and activity level offering public skating, skating lessons, hockey programs and even figure skating! Plan ahead and check out their public skating schedule or stop in to see about signing your kid up for a skating program.
The Morton Arboretum is a great local outdoor attraction no matter what time of the year it is and during the winter is no exception. Their yearly Illumination event is continued with some spectacular lights and trees on display, from their website:
“You’ll be surrounded by color as you walk a one-mile paved path amid interactive lighting effects that highlight the beauty of trees in winter. Enjoy seasonal music, marvel at ever-changing, interactive lighting designs, and warm up by a crackling fire with a cozy drink or roast marshmallows for s’mores.
This year offers fresh twists on favorite experiences and surprising new sights, including art from HYBYCOZO–amazing treelike sculptures that spread intricate designs of light. Hug a tree to see how it responds, let star-like lights wash over you in a grove of trees, and watch multicolored lights dance to symphonic music.”
The event goes until through the New Year and tickets are $23/person during the weekend and $18/person during the weekdays.
Even after the lights are down after the holidays and new year it is still a wonderfully beautiful place to walk around, have some hot chocolate and enjoy the colors of winter in their huge property of gardens, forests, and more.
Sledding is an absolute must for anyone who experiences any sort of snow on the ground around winter and the holidays. There are many hills to go sledding at in Naperville (see the list at the bottom of the post) but the Rotary Park Sled Hill is by far the best & biggest but most importantly – open the latest. But if you are more into snowboarding there is a place for you too – Weigand Riverfront Park located at 2436 S. Washington Street in Naperville just towards the south end of town is your answer. BE WARNED: you can only sled at the sledding hill and only snowboard at the snowboarding hill so plan accordingly!
On days where it seems like you just moved into the arctic tundra the last thing you want to do is spend time in the cold or outside. A great addition to you Naperville area winter activities with or without kids is visiting your local library – stopping by to pick up movies, books, magazines, cds, and sometimes even new video games available to rent – you can find everything you need to keep you occupied inside your cozy home while the snow comes down outside. Just remember to bring your library card – or sign up for one if you don’t! It is a great free local resource for entertainment and learning!
